2008 REVIEW:

> Cymbalom Legacy: Review in Percussive Notes, June 2008

Percussive Notes 56 june 2008

This 45-minute documentary features the brilliant playing of Miklós Lukács and exposes the general public to the traditional and current trends of the cymbalom. A kin to the hammered dulcimer, the cymbalom is played with two sticks but has a pedal like a piano.
The film briefly discusses the instrument's history and how it became the official instrument of Hungary. However, it soon turns to the musical musings of Lukács, a virtuoso cymbalom performer.
While there are videos of him performing, the film focuses on the various styles of music and direction in which Lukács is trying to steer the cymbalom's evolution.
Although the cymbalom comes from a Gypsy background, Lukács performs everything from classical transcriptions of Paganini to Oscar Peterson-inspired jazz. The performances are stellar, and the ideas Lukács has about transforming this relatively unknown instrument to a more well-known and accepted instrument in today's world are inspiring.

'Cymbalom Legacy - The soundscape of Miklós Lukács' dur.45min.

• Hungarian cymbalom virtuoso Miklós Lukács is a Roma whose radical way of blending traditional gypsy tunes with classical harmonies, contemporary jazz and popular music is taking him and his cymbalom into new and exciting musical territory.
